SiteGround Review

SiteGround is a popular shared hosting service provider that provides users with many different hosting options.
These include WordPress hosting, cloud hosting, and even dedicated servers.
For the past two years, we have been monitoring SiteGround's cheapest "startup" sharing plan.
We pay for shared hosting accounts, set up a real-time test site, and have been using third-party tools to closely track its performance to provide fair and transparent audit results.

Overall, SiteGround hosting is among the best among all web hosting companies in terms of uptime (99.99%) and speed (673ms). Their customer support team is knowledgeable, fast and friendly. All plans come with CDN, SSL certificate and email account.
This is an in-depth breakdown of all the advantages and disadvantages.

Pros of Using SiteGround Hosting

SiteGround started with 99.99% uptime, above-average speed, and tons of additional features (perfect for beginners and advanced users).

1. Good Performance – 99.99% Uptime in Last 24 Months

All our hosting reviews are based on at least 24 months of actual statistics and raw data.
During this time, SiteGround's uptime performance was almost perfect. Their average score of 99.99% puts them among the most reliable hosts we reviewed.
Such reliable uptime can satisfy website visitors. But more importantly, this means that your website is almost guaranteed to work around the clock, so you won't miss the products your customers want to buy.

2. Above-Average Load Time (673ms)

When choosing a host, the site speed can easily become the second most important factor.
First, Google’s research shows that if your web page fails to load within three seconds, 53% of people will leave.
In addition, you cannot do much to repair slow hosts. You may be able to compress the image to reduce its weight. You may be able to load them via CDN to reduce the pressure on the server. But once the host slows down? Always slow host.
Fortunately, you don't have to worry about SiteGround. Their average load time (673 milliseconds) is not the fastest we have ever seen, but it does make SiteGround close to the top ten.

3. Good Customer Support Experience (2017-2020)

So far, we have monitored SiteGround for a total of more than two years and have never encountered any major problems with its support.
They provide customers with a knowledge base to help them find their own quick answers. Otherwise, you can make a call by phone or use 24/7 live chat.
For this latest test, we chose the live chat option and established contact with Vladislav in less than a minute.
Unlike other moderators, there is no noticeable delay in the answer. In this way, he seems to know what he is talking about and does not have to look up the answer every time we send a new question.

4. Free Site Migration for 1 Website

Whenever we see a web host offering a "DIY migration" option, it makes us a little anxious. That's because most of them are not very good, and ultimately increase the burden on customers.
However, SiteGround may be an exception to this rule. They created a free WordPress migration plugin that you can upload to any website.

There are no long and boring drills. You only need to generate a token from within the SiteGround hosting account, and the plugin can quickly help you complete the heavy work.

Yes, it still requires you to do some work. But the good news is that you can use this option to migrate any number of websites. (In contrast, some hosts that offer "free migration" set caps after only a few, forcing you to pay after a certain point in time.)
If you want to get some professional hands-on help, SiteGround will provide free services in its higher-level plans (GrowBig and higher).
If you exceed the limits of each plan, they charge a nominal fee of $30 for each additional site.

5. Free SSL Certificate and Content Delivery Network (CDN)

Google Chrome has begun to actively warn people if the website they are trying to visit does not have an SSL certificate set.
SSL helps protect any information sent back and forth between the user’s device and the website, including personal details such as IP addresses or credit card numbers. If left alone, hackers and others may easily intercept this information. Therefore, Chrome is looking for the greatest interest of web users here.

In other words, this basically makes SSL certificates a requirement for all websites today. Fortunately, SiteGround provides these features for free in all plans.
Another good news is the free Cloudflare CDN (Content Delivery Network). CDN stores large files (such as images) on many servers in different locations around the world. This helps ensure that files are stored as close as possible to site visitors, so they can be accessed faster.

SiteGround's servers are distributed on three continents, which helps keep loading times fast and provide a good customer experience.

6. Beginner-to-Advanced Features Available

SiteGround provides some convenience for everyone.
Beginners and bloggers hope you can install popular website builders like Weebly in just a few clicks. Weebly has a simple drag and drop editor, so you have full control over the look and style of the website (without having to delve into the code).
In addition to Weebly, SiteGround is deeply integrated with WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. Each of these applications can be installed quickly and easily. No need for developers to help you.
However, if you are already a developer, you are also lucky.

You will pre-install Git, as well as SSH, WP-CLI, SFTP, and phpMyAdmin in a larger plan. They have multiple PHP versions for you to use. Multi-level caching can be used. You can also access the staging environment so that the site can be prepared or tested before putting new features into production.
SiteGround also uses a proprietary AI-bot prevention tool to help improve security, which will remove new attacks before they occur. Their data shows that 500,000 to 2 million brute force attempts are blocked on servers every hour.
Therefore, you are not alone in dealing with these headaches.

7. 99.99% Uptime Guarantee

Remember the average uptime of 99.99%? Well, this is one reason SiteGround won’t falter here-it will cost them a lot of money.
Usually, when you delve deeply into the terms of service of a web hosting service provider, the fine print will only cover up the bad news.
SiteGround surprised us very well. According to their service level agreement, they guarantee "annual network uptime reaches 99.9%". If they fall below that threshold, you will be paid for free hosting for several months.

Now, there are some conditions on how to calculate the uptime. Any planned or urgent maintenance issues are exempt. If something you do causes downtime (for example, resources are exceeded, an inoperable application is installed or terms are violated), SiteGround will not be liable. Any major external attacks on their systems can also avoid this strategy.

8. 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee

SiteGround offers a 30-day full money-back guarantee in all shared hosting plans. In contrast, their cloud, VPS and dedicated hosting plans only offer a 15-day refund.
Like many other hosts, domain name fees and any other "extra fees" are usually not refundable. This refund policy only applies to brand new customers. Therefore, you cannot get a refund from the renewal plan.

Cons of Using SiteGround Hosting

SiteGround impressed us with near-flawless uptime and their guarantee of free service if uptime dips below 99.99%. Their loading speeds are quite good, even if they’re not the fastest out there. Also, SiteGround offers a variety of apps to make both beginners and advanced users happy.
However, there are a few drawbacks to consider before signing up. So here are some of the bigger issues we ran into during our hands-on test.

1. Higher Renewal Rates

SiteGround’s cheapest plan, StartUp, is advertised on its website as low as $6.99 per month.
This deal looks pretty good, unbelievable, because it is. So far, almost all the virtual hosts we have reviewed have used the same technique. They attract your attention with a low introduction rate, but when renewing, the price doubles (or even triples).
For example, when you renew, the monthly rate of $6.99 jumps to $14.99. SiteGround’s other plans increase monthly fees by $24.99 and $39.99, respectively.
The best solution is to lock in as long as possible (36 months on SiteGround) in order to take advantage of this low interest rate as long as possible.

2. Limited “Cheap” Plan

The price of SiteGround's lowest price plan is comparable to that of competitors, so when you first look at it, it seems like a bargain.
However, the planning functions are not completely consistent.
For example, you get a website and only 10 GB of website space to handle approximately 10,000 visits per month. The plan also has the function of unlimited traffic (or unmetered bandwidth). However, if your website gets closer and closer to those limits, performance will suffer.
This may not be good for smaller sites for a while. However, if your website starts to grow larger, you may have to upgrade and pay more for additional resources.

3. No Free Domain Name

Most web hosting companies will put out "freebies" to attract new customers.
This usually includes low referral rates and other services such as email or migration.
The free domain names for the first year are almost always on this list.
Unfortunately, SiteGround did not do this. If you don't have a domain name yet, they will charge you from the first day, starting at $15.95 per year.

SiteGround Pricing, Hosting Plans & Quick Facts

The StartUp plan: The plan costs $6.99 per month and can host a website, which is very suitable for novices who are just starting to use the website. It can handle up to 10,000 unique visits per month, has unlimited bandwidth, 24/7 client support, free Cloudflare CDN, free Let's Encrypt SSL, unlimited emails and databases, free daily backups and more.
The GrowBig plan: The plan costs $9.99 per month and can host multiple websites. In addition to the StartUp plan, you can also get 1 year of free SSL wildcards, 30 backup copies and free restore, all 3 levels of SuperCacher (which can greatly help load time), and temporary environments for WordPress and Joomla.
Their GoGeek plan: The plan costs $9.99 per month and can host multiple websites. In addition to the StartUp plan, you can also get 1 year of free SSL wildcards, 30 backup copies and free restore, all 3 levels of SuperCacher (which can greatly help load time), and temporary environments for WordPress and Joomla.

Do We Recommend SiteGround?

Yes, we do.
SiteGround has delivered reliable uptime for several years. Their uptime guarantee ensures that you will never encounter major downtime issues.
Their website speed is also very good. This is due in part to their servers on three continents and free Cloudflare CDN accounts. They also provide you with free SSL for all plans.
If you can take advantage of the longest period, the pricing will be good. Otherwise, you will eventually reach these higher renewal rates sooner. Also bring your own domain name to avoid additional charges.
